  • Cane Island Gardening Club Creates Area’s First Community Seed Sharing Program

    June 28, 2021

When Katy residents Danielle Gilman and Korinne Provoast took a bike ride through their Cane Island neighborhood in the spring of 2020 during the height of the pandemic, little did they know an innocent conversation about gardening would ultimately blossom into one of the area’s first community seed sharing programs.

“We were talking about all our neighbors who started gardening during the pandemic and decided to start a Facebook group to share advice with one another,” recalls Gilman.  “We are mostly amateurs so the back and forth with neighbors was great.”

Besides sharing their gardening tips, members of the newly created Cane Island Gardening Club started swapping plants and seeds.  That’s when Gilman and Provoast came up with the idea for a Seed Share Shack, a dispensary where residents can donate their extra seeds and take the seeds they want for their own gardens.

The two turned to fellow Cane Island neighbor Mandy Kleinman, who built the community’s “Little Library,” to come up with a design for Cane Island’s Seed Share Shack.  Located in front of Cane Island’s community garden next to the Cane Quarter Conservatory, the wooden structure with pullout shelves is filled with seed packets for tomatoes, peppers, peas, garlic, kale, beets, green beans and others.

“It’s really neat to think there are so many people in the community who suddenly are interested in gardening,” says Provoast, who recently planned the community’s first farmers market.  “Like all of our Cane Island clubs, the Gardening Club is a very supportive group.”

Besides building camaraderie with neighbors, all of the interest in gardening has helped her toddler embrace the flavors of fresh produce.

“He loves to pick tomatoes,” she adds.  “It’s fun for our family and it helps us teach him responsibility at an early age.”

Gilman says she and fellow gardening club members are in the early stages of starting a summer “Garden Stroll” when neighbors can walk from house to house and try items from various Cane Island gardens. The initial farmers market was so successful there is one scheduled the third Saturday of every month.

To reach the Katy community of new homes, take the Cane Island Parkway exit off Interstate 10 minutes west of the Grand Parkway.  Head north on Cane Island Parkway and take the roadway directly into the community.

  • Onsite Katy ISD Elementary School Announced for Katy’s Cane Island

  • Accent Wall Ideas That’ll Make Your Room Pop

Are you tired of staring at that drab or outdated wall but just aren’t sure what to do with it? Or maybe you’re moving into a new home and want a fresh design look. Either way, here’s a look at some of the latest design trends including accent and statement wall ideas that will give your current home a facelift or your new home an awe-inspiring look that will make your new neighbors green with envy.

    Cason Graye Shiplap

    Shiplap is Out (sort of)

There was a time when you’d be hard-pressed to find a TV show that wasn’t renovating a room using shiplap. Are visions of Chip and Joanna Gaines flashing through your mind? While shiplap walls in Texas may never go completely out of style thanks to rustic-chic barns and Hill Country hideaways, the once popular trend is taking a backseat to some fresher ideas. Don’t worry, if you are a lover of all things farmhouse and you can’t envision a room without a wall of whitewashed wide-planked boards, it’s ok! When used to highlight or complement an overall design theme (a la rustic farmhouse) the style will still look beautiful and trendy. However, it’s time to embrace shiplap 2021. What does that mean? It means say goodbye to white and hello to dark, moody shiplap walls and fireplaces. Already have traditional white shiplap? Give it a fresh coat of dark green, or even black, paint to make it pop and give it new life.

    William Graye Wallpaper

    Wallpaper is In

You read that right! Homeowners now are embracing wallpaper, albeit with a bit less commitment. Thanks to removable peel-and-stick wallpaper, novice and professional designers are stepping out of the box and trying something new. Afterall, that dark moody wallpaper idea for your hall bathrooms seems less scary when you know it can simply be removed if it’s not quite the look you wanted. In addition, families can now freely and easily decorate nurseries and kids’ rooms just as quickly as the young ones’ tastes are guaranteed to change. Since décor trends can wreak havoc on resale, having the ability to simply remove wallpaper and replace it with neutral paint is a desirable option. Oh, and if you’re renting a home or you’re the owner of a rental property, the idea of easily removed peel-and-stick wallpaper is music to your ears. There’s never been a better time to embrace change, be daring, and try something new – like that zebra-print wallpaper you’ve favorited on your Pinterest design board.

    William David Colorful Office

    More Color, Less Gray

Sure, gray goes with everything and let’s face it, there are an overwhelming amount of grays to choose from so it’s an easy go-to for neutral paint that is not beige. However, homeowners and designers are stepping away from the simple and going bold. Gray, while calming and agreeable, can also appear cold and lack personality. After having been stuck at home for over a year, homeowners are wanting some pizzaz, a little oomph to an otherwise sterile room. Enter: color. While it doesn’t have to be a plethora of colors, an eye-popping indigo blue will make those kitchen cabinets or island stand out. If you’re building a new home, talk to your builder’s design team about the best way to incorporate color and give your new home that much-desired “wow” factor! Or, if you are tired of staring at the same gray walls, head to your nearest paint store and talk with the color experts about your vision and how to make it come to life and watch your old space come to life with the simple swipe of a brush.

    Cason Graye Dining Room

All White No Longer Reigns Supreme

White is safe. White is clean. White is crisp. But is white now boring? Designers are saying so. The trend of making everything in the home, from countertops to walls to furniture, white is being left behind. Sure, it’s minimalistic and appeals to those less adventurous homeowners or those who want to create a clean slate that allows art and accent pieces to pop but it often lacks visual appeal. Now, this is not to say a clean and minimalistic-style home is not doable. Thinking outside the box, homeowners are now layering whites and creams, along with light-colored patterns, to give the home and overall décor more dimension. If clothing designers can create stunning monochromatic outfits that are both timeless and chic, why can’t interior designers do the same? Next time you’re looking for simple ways to give your favorite white room a bit of flair, look for cream pillows, beige or gray accent pieces, or even grab a blanket or pillow with texture.

    William David Granny Chic

    “Grandmillennial” Meets “Granny Chic”

Remember walking into your grandmother’s home and shaking your head at her floral wallpaper or crocheted throws? Sure, it’s nostalgic but it’s not anything you ever considered putting in your home…until now. Millennials are now embracing these long-gone trends in an effort to recreate those memories but with a fresh take. It’s a modern revival of homey design elements meant to invoke memories of poundcake, old-time television shows and holiday moments that could only happen at Grandma’s house. These antique pieces and accents give modern spaces a warm touch and incorporate a piece of the past into the future. So next time you see an ornate mirror or picture frame, don’t pass it by. Hang it proudly next to the modern light fixture and give your room a “granny chic” conversation piece that will have you wanting a needlepoint “Home Sweet Home” sign by your door in no time.

    Cason Graye Tile Backsplash

Unique Tiles Make for Interesting Backsplashes

Tile has long been a way for designers and DIYers to make a splash at any cost. While unique tiles can be beautiful, and costly, creating a stunning backsplash or bathroom shower doesn’t need to break the bank. In the past, a kitchen or bathroom could be refreshed with a white subway tile. While that’s still the case, people are now leaning towards ceramic tiles with Moroccan or Spanish influence. However, if an elaborate display of handcrafted tiles is not in the budget, individual pieces can be incorporated throughout a more cost-efficient design to add an extra pop while staying within budget.

    Gallery Wall

Unique Artful Wall Displays (gallery walls, heirloom displays)

Good news! If the idea of painting or wallpapering makes you shudder, you can improve a room by simply hanging photos or displaying your favorite collection of heirlooms on a wall. Do you have sketches collected from your travels, black and white photos from generations before that are collecting dust, or even a unique plate collection passed down from someone you love? Gather that beloved collection of items or photos and create a gallery wall that will create a curated art display.  This will allow you to create a statement wall and invite conversation about your collectables all while showcasing your most valued pieces.

Whether you’re looking to completely renovate a room, make a slight color adjustment, or decorate a new move-in ready home from scratch, these current design trends are sure to help make a big impact. The message of 2021 is to be brave with color, think outside the gray or white box, embrace texture, incorporate color and patterns, and take a second look at your grandparents’ seemingly old-fashioned décor.

  • Where to Find the Best BBQ in Katy, TX

Who has the best barbecue in Texas is an ongoing debate and a topic that can get pretty heated among meat lovers across the state and the nation, to be honest! While Texans can agree on our state having the best barbecue, we’re narrowing it down and looking at who has some of the best BBQ in Katy! That’s right, here’s a look at where you can get your fix on everything from brisket to ribs to pulled pork and jalapeno sausage! If your stomach is growling, get ready because this food-lovers journey is just beginning. Grab your fork, friends!

    Midway Bar-B-Que

Almost every good barbecue place starts with a good, simple story. Midway Barbeque in Katy is no different. In the mid 90's, Herman Meyer realized his grocery store and deer processor customers had
nowhere to go for good BBQ in Katy. So, he did what any resourceful Texan would do and he opened a shack in front of his Midway Grocery Store and called in Midway BBQ. Times may change and this tiny grocery store and meat market have certainly grown, but perfectly smoked barbecue never changes. Today Midway BBQ offers a host of options, including a post oak smoked sliced brisket plate, pecan smoked sausage plate, along with a ham plate and a rib plate that will not disappoint. However, Midway BBQ also offers tacos, a Cuban sandwich made with slow smoked pork butt, and a brisket-loaded frito pie.

What’s that? You want to know what they offer for dessert that perfectly accompanies barbecue while also screaming Texas? That’s easy – their homemade Texas sheetcake in either chocolate or strawberry!

    Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que

At Cooper’s, “It’s all about the meat!” This barbecue restaurant may be new-ish to Katy but Texans across the state have been dining on Cooper’s famous Hill Country-style barbeque since 1962. Long before they made it to Katy, Cooper’s was born in Llano, Texas. A longtime favorite for hunters and Hill Country visitors, Cooper’s is the original “served off the pit” style barbecue in the state of Texas.

Barbecue is a tradition in Texas and though they’ve ventured outside Llano they still cowboy cook their meat over live mesquite coals the same way they’ve done since the 60’s. A great place to grab one of their famous Big Chops or a juicy piece of turkey, Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que in Katy offers families the ideal spot to dine at traditional picnic style seating, as well as a full bar and outdoor patio seating, while the kids play on the large lawn area. While there’s plenty of reasons to escape to the Hill Country, getting your favorite selection of meat from Cooper’s is no longer one of them – now, they’re right down the road in Katy!

    Brett’s BBQ Shop

The Biggest, Little BBQ Shop in Texas, Brett’s BBQ in Katy may be newer to the area but what they lack in years they make up for in flavor. Don’t let being established in 2018 fool you, Brett learned a thing or two about barbecue while working at Louis Mueller Barbecue. Smoking meats low and slow over oak wood fire until perfectly tender is the name of the game here.

What does Brett’s offer? Texas-style smoked meats including brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs, turkey breast, pulled pork and house-made beef sausage. As we all know, a good side never hurt anybody so be sure to add a helping of cilantro-jalapeno slaw to your order! Oh, and if you’re lucky enough to visit on a Saturday, get there early and enjoy their delectable pork belly burnt ends! To tease your tastebuds, learn about daily specials and to know when they’re sold out, follow Brett’s BBQ on Instagram. *Staring at photos may cause mouth to start watering.

    Harris County Smokehouse

If you’re craving eggs with your brisket, Harris County Smokehouse in Katy is the place to go! This family understands it’s never too early to eat barbecue which is why they start serving at 7am and continue right on through to dinner! That’s right, you could start and end your day with perfectly smoked meats from Harris County Smokehouse. Harris County Smokehouse was started in 1998, and this family of restaurateurs had a passion for breakfast so you’ll find more than just barbecue here. You’ll find your diner breakfast favorites like french toast and breakfast tacos along with smoked sausage and eggs, served all day. However, if you’re craving a meat-packed lunch and dinner, they’ve got you covered. Sink your teeth into everything from brisket burgers to BBQ sandwiches and everything in between. Whether you’re a breakfast for breakfast only or a breakfast for dinner type person, Harris County Smokehouse is about to be your favorite new all-day spot to fill your belly.

    Chuckwagon BBQ and Burgers

What could be better than just plain barbecue? Ok, to some barbecue purists, nothing. But, to those who love that little extra “oomph” how about a not-so-secret menu with items only the team at Chuckwagon BBQ and Burgers in Katy could dream up! What does this menu include? For starters, a Hot Cheeto Burrito stuffed with chopped brisket, mac and cheese, Hot Cheetos, cheddar cheese, and sriracha hot sauce all wrapped up in a flour tortilla! Did we also mention the Orange, Black and Blue Fries? Oh, you won’t want to miss these sweet potato fries tossed in cinnamon and brown sugar, topped with chopped brisket, cheddar cheese, blue cheese dressing, green onions, and bacon! Ok, now back to you purists! Chuckwagon offers a traditional meat selection of sliced or chopped brisket, pulled pork, sausage, jalapeno cheddar sausage, pork ribs, boudin, bone-in chicken, chicken breast, and turkey. You can have your choice of meat plates, sandwiches, by-the-pound, or on a salad!

But wait, Chuckwagon appeals to more than just barbecue traditionalists and adventurous meat lovers, they also offer Halal meats, meaning the beef is cooked separately from pork products and their smoker racks are cleaned and sanitized in between cooks and they use separate cutting boards and knives. From Halal to traditional barbecue to a spicy and smoky burrito, Chuckwagon BBQ and Burgers has something for everyone.

    Red River Bar-B-Que and Grill

Nearly two decades in and Red River Bar-B-Que and Grill  continues to serve barbeque lovers across the Houston area. Starting in League City, brothers Kevin and Ric Kiersch built a restaurant business based on treating every diner like family. A menu packed with favorites like slow-smoked Texas barbecue, barbecue spuds, and sandwiches this restaurant appeals to the masses. While not liking barbecue may get you some strange looks in Texas, Red River offers a variety of food from burgers to seafood po’boys to fish and shrimp plates. And make sure you go hungry because you aren’t going to want to miss their delicious appetizers like Texas Hushpuppies made of brisket, barbecue sauce, and pepper jack cheese, battered and fried.

Red River Bar-B-Que is a local Katy spot where families with all different food preferences can go and find a tasty bite to eat. So bring the crew after a sporting event and head to Red River and while you’re there, be sure to grab a slice of pecan pie or a cookie brownie bar where you can have the best of both worlds!

    Rudy’s Bar-B-Q and Country Store

If you’re familiar with Texas barbecue, you’re familiar with Rudy’s! If it feels like visiting Rudy’s BBQ is a bit like walking into a mixture of a country store, gas station, grocery store and barbecue restaurant – it’s because that’s how Rudy’s began! Dating back generations Rudy’s was a one-stop shop in small town Leon Springs, Texas, until BBQ was added and now it’s a stop for meat lovers across the Southwest.

Using pits that are 100% wood fired with oak, a slower burning wood than the mesquite used by others, accompanied with Rudy’s Bar-B-Q dry spice, you can bite into ribs, pork, and brisket that will taste exactly how you like it. You’ll also enjoy the no fuss atmosphere of Rudy’s where getting a plate of barbecue is as simple as walking in, hoppin’ in line, picking your meat and side and finding a table. The good news is, once you fall in love with Rudy’s Bar-B-Q in Katy you can rest easy knowing they have locations throughout Texas and as far west as Phoenix and as far east as Florida!

    Dozier’s BBQ

If you’re willing to venture outside of Katy, Dozier’s BBQ in Fulshear is worth the extra few minutes. Using Mr. Dozier’s 50-year-old recipes, the pitmasters at Dozier’s have been offering up Texas-style barbecue and pecan smoked meats including brisket, pork ribs, chicken, sausage, bacon, and jerky since 1957. What’s the best time to eat barbeque? It’s always the right time which is why you won’t want to miss Sunday brunch at Dozier’s. Sit back on their new outdoor patio, breathe in the country air and know that the day’s toughest decision will be whether to order the Brisket on a Biscuit or Espresso-Rubbed Pork Ribs.

Heck, you may want to just skip the savory and dive right into the sweet with their Smoked Monkey Bread, a house-made twisted bread smoked with caramel sauce, pecans, bourbon-infused raisins, and topped with a bourbon caramel sauce. And because no breakfast is complete with bacon, add an order of the Presidential Bacon – bacon so good former President George H.W. Bush had it shipped to him at the White House!

As you can see, there are plenty of spots for families and meat lovers to enjoy mouthwatering barbecue in Katy. We believe you can never have too much barbecue, or eat it too often, so keep this list as a guide and when you find yourself craving a bite of the smoky goodness, head over to one of these incredible barbecue restaurants just down the road.

  • Katy ISD Bryant Elementary Principal Earns Distinguished Recognition

    April 6, 2021

Congratulations to Dr. William Rhodes, principal at Robert and Felice Bryant Elementary (one of Cane Island’s outstanding Katy ISD schools), named a Texas National Distinguished Principal Finalist by the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association.  Dr. Rhodes is one of only five school leaders across Texas to earn the honor.

At Bryant Elementary, a culture of kindness can be found in every aspect of the school, from the all-volunteer Kindness Crew and kindness fundraiser to teachers who demonstrate their kindness by building genuine relationships with students.

Kindness does more than just help students respect one another, at Bryant Elementary it gives them the confidence to ask questions and seek guidance without fear or hesitation.

Bryant Elementary’s unique environment is further enriched by an active PTA and the presence of school namesakes Robert and Felice Bryant, two pillars of the Katy ISD community, who routinely participate in collaborative learning activities and share their more than five decades of experience with teachers and administrators.

Cane Island families also attend Katy Junior High School, where teachers uphold a standard of excellence backed by a partnership with parents and community; and Katy High School, where teachers present a well-rounded curriculum, including Advanced Placement coursework, dedicated to the study of languages, mathematics, fine arts and humanities.

  • 2021 Home Design Trends

    April 1, 2021

It’s a new year which means it’s time to update your décor or possibly upgrade your home. Whether you are tired of staring at your kitchen after being homebound in 2020 or you’re planning to take advantage of low interest rates in 2021 by purchasing a new home, it’s time to prioritize your wants vs needs and get to decorating.

There’s no doubt 2020 shaped, or re-shaped, home design trends and forced homeowners to decide what is most important for them. Here’s a look at what home builders and homeowners are looking for in the latest home design trends for 2021.

    Cane Island Home Office

    Dedicated Home Offices

2020 saw many of our work environments abruptly switch from corporate offices to new, often ill-equipped, work-from-home setups. Now, with many employers allowing employees to work remote permanently, having an adequate home office is more important than ever. In 2021, homeowners are stepping away from the kitchen table and creating a space that fits their 9- to -5 needs. Whether you’re building a new construction home or renovating your current house, an efficient home office, away from the chaos and television noise, is on the top of the list for almost every homeowner.

You may not be driving to the office every day but it’s still important, maybe more so now than ever before, that homeowners have a dedicated space that allows them to focus during work hours, then shut the office door and seamlessly transition to personal life after work hours.

    Clearly Defined Rooms and Spaces

Remember when open concept ruled all? While it’s still valued by many, 2020 taught families the value of defined spaces and being able to have their own room for everything from quiet time to studying to working out. Homeowners are now seeking to define spaces, or create nooks within open floor plans, that will easily allow for family gatherings or for family members to step away and enjoy personal time.

What does that look like exactly? Don’t worry, it’s not tiny rooms within the home that result in a cramped feeling. Instead, it’s unique pockets or loft-style rooms for e-learning, home workouts, lounging, and more. There is such a thing as too much togetherness, or so we found out during the pandemic. These rooms allow for individual hobbies, personal time and work to be uniquely “yours” in a time where that once seemed impossible. Additionally, many new home buyers are looking for more space to accommodate their multigenerational family, giving each member a defined space within the home.

    Houseplants and Indoor Gardens

Last year, people were confined to their home and unable to get their nature fix, emphasizing the importance of the great outdoors. Whether you were staying indoors or taking walks around your neighborhood to simply occupy your time and breathe some fresh air, the benefits of trees and flowers was never more evident. This has led homeowners to want to bring the outside in in 2021.

This year you’ll see homeowners and those building their dream home, continue to plan around indoor and outdoor gardens, making room for more living plants as well and adding plenty of windows for natural light. Think more zen and monochromatic relaxing vibes to bring the outdoors in!

    Cane Island Outdoor Living Area

    Outdoor Living Spaces

The pandemic forced families to step back from their typically hectic lives filled with sports practices, vacations and commitments, only to embrace their loved ones and find the same sense of adventure within their home or backyard. To the surprise of many, being at home was exciting and finding new ways to have fun was an adventure in and of itself. Now, homeowners and new home buyers are prioritizing outdoor living spaces that include pools, elaborate playgrounds and outdoor kitchens.

Outdoor living spaces are creating a vacation-feel without leaving your home and families in 2021 are excited about it. With our larger Cane Island homesites and year-round Texas sunshine, your family will enjoy ample room to build an outdoor living space that will have you saying, “let’s stay home” more often than ever before.

    Cane Island Kitchen Design

    Fun and Functional Kitchens

Now that families are accustomed to cooking at home, as opposed to the previous default of dining out, homeowners are wanting fun and functional kitchens. It’s not news that the kitchen is the hub of the home, especially for families and regular entertainers. However, many who once preferred restaurants are now enjoying cooking and baking.

Kitchens are one area of the home where open concept still reigns supreme and that’s not changing in 2021. Novice and professional cooks alike are designing kitchens with top-notch appliances, playing with bolder colors, using luxe finishes while incorporating islands that allow for more storage and gathering space to sit and join the conversation.

    Cane Island Home Design

    Varieties of Texture

Neutrals are no longer boring in design. This year, homeowners and designers are incorporating more neutrals, such as white, cream, beige and sage green, into their color scheme. If you’re thinking blah, think again! This monochromatic look, coupled with rich textures and natural elements such as jute, rattan, oak or marble, create a luxuriously rich environment while still remaining serene.

Fear not, color lovers. A neutral room is a great canvas for those colorful pieces you love most, allowing them to pop and make their own statement within the room.

    Home Gyms

Remember when you rushed to make it to the gym on time for your favorite class or stopped by for a quick workout after leaving the office? Thanks to virtual classes, luxury spin bikes with overly excited instructors, and countless apps that bring celebrity trainers into your home (for a fraction of the cost) home gyms are the way of the future. So it’s no surprise that homeowners are wanting a dedicated space for a home gym.

Sure, a garage is always an option but many new home buyers are incorporating this room into their design and floor plan preferences. While our amenity-rich master-planned community has an on-site fitness center and yoga room, having an in-home fitness studio is a luxury many are opting for in 2021.

    Gallery Wall

If 2020 and an unprecedented global pandemic taught us one thing, it’s the importance of family. Homeowners are embracing an old classic and creating artful gallery walls that showcase family adventures, sketches, old black and white images, and family keepsakes, paying homage to people who came before, the ones we laugh with daily, and the moments we never want to forget.

These gallery walls can be elaborate stairwell art or simple designs in guest rooms. Whatever option you choose these walls should be a reflection of your heritage, telling the story of you. Include antique frames with a mix of metal and wooden frames to give an eclectic but intentional design that will have people reading the story of you and your family in a visual book displayed beautifully on your walls.

While design trends are known to shift and expected to ebb and flow year after year, 2020 and the ramifications of the pandemic have brought about trends we are excited to see and know that many of our Cane Island families will embrace. From outdoor living spaces to home gyms to the all-important functional kitchen, our Cane Island new home builders can help you create a space that will fit your family’s needs and embrace all the good things that came from a year full of unpredictability.
