  • Here’s How to Find The Master-Planned Community That’s Right For You

    January 19, 2021

The Houston area is home to a number of quality master-planned communities and with so many to consider, knowing what to look for in an enclave of new homes can help you select one that’s best for your family for years to come.

Before you start looking at homes, take in the community’s arrival experience and drive its neighborhoods.  Are there special features that create a unique arrival? Are esplanades and green spaces well landscaped?  Do shrubs and plants at neighborhood entries appear healthy and well maintained?

Take stock of amenities for fitness, recreation and entertainment.  In Cane Island, one of west Houston’s top-selling communities, residents enjoy unlimited use of a two-story, 24-hour fitness center, a tranquil yoga studio with hundreds of on-demand classes, lap pool, lagoon-style family pool and cabanas, children’s water playground and central lawn for movie nights, concerts and other events.

As for other onsite conveniences, Cane Island is one of the few Houston-area new home communities with an onsite full-service restaurant, The Oaks Kitchen & Bar.

A quality community should offer well-known homebuilders with ample, move-in ready homes and plans to suit any lifestyle.  Plus, homesites should be wide enough to provide sufficient open space and the feel of a larger property. In Cane Island, for example, buyers can choose properties from 50 to 100-feet in width.  The community also offers acreage properties in its exclusive custom home neighborhood, The Estates.

Finally, get a sense of the community’s lifestyle.  Are there residents out on the walking and jogging paths?  Are families out on the playgrounds?  An active lifestyle community such as Cane Island also is staffed by a full-time, onsite Lifestyle Director who plans events to foster that camaraderie among neighbors.

If the master-planned community you’re considering checks these boxes, you’ve probably found the one that’s right for you.

To reach Cane Island, take the Cane Island Parkway exit off Interstate 10 minutes west of the Grand Parkway.  Head north on Cane Island Parkway one half mile to reach the community entrance.   Fourteen model homes are open daily.

  • Cane Island Donates Outdoor Classroom Seating at Katy High School’s Tiger Prairie

    November 7, 2020

Katy High School teachers and students as well as those visiting the Tiger Prairie now have a comfortable spot to hone their skills in biology, environmental science, art and nature photography thanks to a gift from Katy’s Cane Island.

The Katy community of new homes located minutes from the school has donated four, large outdoor tables and benches to create a new outdoor classroom setting within the nature-inspired property at the corner Highway 90 and 1463.

Situated under a giant live oak on the northeast corner of the prairie property, the new benches are large enough to seat up to 32 students at a time.

“The tables and benches are a wonderful focal point for the prairie and will be the central gathering area as we conduct lessons,” notes teacher Kelly Knight of the Katy High School Science Department.  “Since each bench seats eight, we can fit an entire classroom at the same time. That’s a big plus.”
Dr. Rhonda Burrough of the school’s Science Department adds the new, all-weather benches and tables also provide a comfortable spot for residents visiting the property.

“The Tiger Prairie is not just for Katy High School, it’s for the entire Katy community,” she says.  “We want residents to wander in, sit for a while and enjoy the beauty of a native Texas prairie.”

The donation came about when the Cane Island development team learned of the Katy Prairie’s needs for tables and benches.

“Our families attend Katy High School so we certainly feel a special connection to the prairie,” says Lawren Eckhardt Couvalt, director of marketing for Cane Island.  “We’re delighted to support such a worthwhile endeavor.”

The native prairie ecosystem at Katy High School was created under the direction of the Katy Prairie Conservancy and the Wildlife Habitat Federation.

When a longtime Katy family decided to sell their prized hometown property north of Interstate 10, their minds were set on a buyer who would imagine the next chapter for the former agricultural land, creating a source of pride for both the family and the City of Katy.

They envisioned a new kind of community of homes to emerge on the land, an early 1800’s settlement known as Cane Island from those who described the breathtaking vista as an “island of sugar cane in the blowing wind.”

In 2016, that vision became a reality with the opening of the aptly named Cane Island, the first master-planned community within the boundaries of the City of Katy.

Cane Island features new homes by acclaimed builders, resort-style amenities including an onsite restaurant, immediate I-10 access, Katy ISD schools, proximity to major west Houston employers and an abundance of nearby shopping, dining and entertainment.

Starting in the $280s, new, move-in ready homes feature gourmet island kitchens with butler pantries and morning rooms, secluded wine grottos, spacious family rooms, inviting master suites, state-of-the-art media rooms, fun-packed game rooms and outdoor entertaining spaces. New homes also offer functional, yet inspiring home offices.

At Cane Quarter, residents enjoy the tranquility of a yoga studio with on-demand classes, a fully equipped, two-story fitness center, lap pool, lagoon-style family pool and cabanas, children’s water playground and central lawn, fireplace loft and The Oaks Kitchen & Bar.

Plus, a full-time onsite Lifestyle Director plans movie nights, outdoor concerts, seasonal shopping events and other community gatherings.

Residents also receive a challenging, yet well-rounded education at Katy ISD’s Bryant Elementary, Katy Junior High and Katy High School, all just minutes from the community.

  • Cane Island’s The Oaks Kitchen & Bar Introduces New Executive Chef, New Menu Offerings

    July 6, 2020

The Oaks Kitchen & Bar, the charming dining spot tucked away in the Katy community of Cane Island, has added a new Executive Chef and Pastry Chef while unveiling a new menu featuring entrees prepared over an open-flame oak wood grill.

Now open daily, The Oaks Kitchen & Bar has named Katy native Kevin Callahan, previously with Austin’s critically acclaimed The Roaring Fork, as its new Executive Chef.  Callahan also has served as Executive Chef at Ritual in the Heights and as Sous Chef at Perla’s, one of Austin’s top upscale seafood experiences.

Under Callahan’s direction, The Oaks Kitchen & Bar has unveiled new lunch and dinner menus featuring ranch-inspired American classics including several prepared on a top-of-the-line Aztec grill where an open flame from Texas-sourced hardwood oak heats up to a searing 1500 degrees.  Plus, Callahan says the grill’s heat-retaining bricks ensure a constant temperature across the entire grilling area.

“You get better consistency, better searing and just an all around better cooking experience,” he adds.

The new menus also feature regional signature plates, shareable appetizers, fresh salads, burgers with Waygu and Black Angus blended beef, and house-made desserts prepared fresh daily. Most entrees are served with seasonal vegetables sourced from another local favorite – Katy’s Beckendorff Farms.

Entree newcomers include Potato Crusted Red Snapper with organic quinoa, sautéed oyster mushrooms and cauliflower, wood-grilled Rib-Eye with Yukon gold mashers and seasonal vegetables, Blackened Salmon, and Whole Branzino Fish, an Instagram-worthy, deboned wood-fired grilled European Sea Bass stuffed with lump crab and mushrooms.

Topping the list of new appetizer selections is a Gulf Coast Ceviche marinated in cumin vinaigrette, Chicken Lollipops, New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp, and a BLT Sliders Duo of pork belly, lettuce, tomato, red onions and creole mustard.

The Oaks Kitchen & Bar also has expanded its dessert and pastry offerings, all prepared daily from scratch, by new Pastry Chef Juliet Comer.  House-made selections include a decadent Chocolate Cake, Spiced Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting, Bourbon Bread Pudding with bourbon glaze, Peach Cobbler topped with ice cream and caramel sauce, and a melt-in-your-mouth Crème Brule.

Diners also enjoy a selection of martinis, handcrafted cocktails, sought-after wines and beers.

Longtime restaurateur Adam Pettit remains as General Manager of The Oaks Kitchen & Bar.
