Katy ISD Board of Trustees Approves Name for Cane Island’s New Onsite Elementary

Cane Island’s new Katy ISD school will open in August as Steve & Elaine Robertson Elementary following a unanimous vote of the district’s Board of Trustees.

The school’s name comes from two long-time Katy ISD educators, Dr. Steve and Mrs. Elaine Robertson, whose careers in public education spanned a combined 64 years. They both retired from Katy ISD in 2020.

“We’re delighted our onsite elementary will carry on the rich tradition of these two dedicated educators,” says Lawren Eckhardt Covault, Cane Island director of marketing.

Dr. Steve Robertson began his career in 1985 as a Spring Branch ISD elementary teacher.  He later joined Conroe ISD and eventually made his way to Katy ISD where he served as an elementary, junior high and high school principal. He also served the district as an assistant superintendent.

Elaine Robertson began her career as a deaf education elementary teacher in 1987. After pausing her work to focus on her family, she returned to the field in 1997 as a Katy ISD parent-infant advisor. She later served as an instructional officer for deaf education, vision and assistive technology and ultimately was a driving force behind establishing Katy ISD’s Audiological Center.  

“We will certainly honor their legacy with pride,” Covault added.

Located at 7400 Innovation Drive in the heart of the Katy community of new homes, Steve & Elaine Robertson Elementary will offer spacious classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, leading edge teaching technologies and prominent natural light throughout the campus. 

Cane Island residents will continue to attend Katy Junior High School and Katy High School.

To reach the Katy community of new homes, take the Cane Island Parkway exit off Interstate 10 minutes west of the Grand Parkway.  Head north on Cane Island Parkway and take the roadway directly into the community.
